About
Lottie is a UK-based visual and 3D artist working in a playful fusion of textiles and ceramics. She has lived and worked between London, Cambridge, Surrey and Sweden.
She studied at University of Arts London, Chelsea College of Arts, The Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås and Kingston University. Her practice is material-led and conceptual, implementing textile and ceramic processes, drawing and painting. She has showcased work at the Victoria & Albert Museum, University of Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum and University College London.
Statement
Investigating how objects can feel fixed and frozen, or fluid, soft and flexible, Lottie uses sculpting, stitching, carving, casting, screen-printing, painting and drawing to communicate tactile forms and surfaces.
Her sculptures have animated, colourful and sometimes toy-like personalities. Others feel like unearthed abstract objects made from unusual ingredients - for example mud and clay, talcum powder, wax, and the smell of birch tar have made appearances. These reactive material choices and organic, morphing shapes usually stem from seeing the world in abstract ways, or as a hyper-imagined ‘something else.’ Inspired often by memory and human sensitivity, ways of interacting by touch, weight and smell are common threads running through designs.
Loops have become a repeated motif in painted and clay forms. Originating first in 2018 from magnified flannel textures in Marg’s Place, they have followed Lottie from their ordinary, comforting textile origin. Regenerating in 2D and 3D ways, they represent a therapeutic obsession to sculpt bumpy, stretchy and voluptuous textiles in fixed 3D forms.
